Description

Saraswati is the Hindu goddess and patron of sciences, arts, music, letters. It sharpens the intellect.
The first expression of the female Divine Trinity, Saraswati is the consort of Brahma and the daughter of Shiva and Durga.
Her name means 'the essence of the Self', from the Sanskrit 'sara' meaning 'essence' and 'swa' meaning 'self'.
It is the personification of Spirit, Wisdom, Consciousness and Cosmic Knowledge. It is also Purity and Divine Knowledge that purifies, revives and creates.
Saraswati is a symbol of Right Judgment, the victory of Spirit and Knowledge against pride, arrogance and greed.

In Indian art, Saraswati is depicted as a beautiful, young woman, wearing white or yellow clothes. White symbolizes the purity of the real Knowledge it offers, while yellow, Spring, the season associated with it. The white sari she wears reflects her purity and rejection of all that is materialistic.
Saraswati does not wear jewelry, nor does she paint herself with bright colors. Her appearance is modest by Indian standards, thus wanting to emphasize her indifference to material goods and her preference for spiritual wealth.
